Streaming giant Netflix has acquired InterPositive, a filmmaking technology company founded by Oscar-winning actor and director Ben Affleck. The firm develops artificial intelligence tools designed to support film production and editing. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition highlights the growing interest of major media companies in using artificial intelligence to improve the filmmaking process. Netflix said the technology could help streamline production while maintaining creative control for filmmakers.
Affleck will also join Netflix as a senior adviser following the acquisition.
AI Tools Designed for Filmmakers
InterPositive was founded in 2022 by Affleck. The company developed an AI model trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency in filmmaking.
The technology is designed to help solve common production challenges. These include missing shots, lighting inconsistencies, and editing errors that often occur during filming.
Affleck said the tools were created with clear limitations to protect artistic control. According to him, the goal was not to replace creative professionals but to support their work.
“We built in restraints to protect creative intent,” Affleck said. He added that the tools allow responsible experimentation while ensuring final decisions remain with filmmakers.
Industry Shifts Towards AI
The deal reflects a wider shift in the entertainment industry. For years, many in Hollywood expressed concern that artificial intelligence could threaten creative jobs and intellectual property rights.
However, several studios are now exploring how the technology can assist with storytelling and production.
For example, Disney recently announced plans to allow OpenAI to use characters from franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel in its Sora AI video generator.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the company believes new tools should expand creative freedom rather than replace the work of writers, directors, and actors.
Strategic Move for Netflix
The acquisition also marks Netflix’s first major deal since stepping away from a high-profile bidding battle for studio and streaming assets from Warner Bros. Discovery.
By investing in AI-powered production tools, Netflix appears to be focusing on technological innovation to strengthen its content pipeline as competition in the global streaming industry continues to intensify.
