According to a LocalCircles poll, 76% of the respondents had seen a 25–100% increase in their monthly vegetable spending over the past two years.
According to a large number of respondents to a national online survey, the average monthly household spending on vegetables has nearly doubled over the last two years. The poll responses from the neighborhood social media network LocalCircles show that 76% of respondents saw a rise in their monthly spending for vegetables of between 25% and 100% during the past two years. And over 22,000 responses from families in 307 districts throughout India were received for the pan-India survey.

36% of households reported that their vegetable spending had grown by 25% to 50%. Another 31% of the respondents said that the increased spending was between 50% and 100%, while 9% stated that it was over 100%.
The poll also attempted to quantify the increase in the price of current-year vegetables like tomatoes, onions, and potatoes. According to results, 1 in 2 homes reportedly paid more than ₹ 50 per Kg for tomatoes, ₹ 30 per Kg for onions, and ₹ 25 per Kg for potatoes in 2022. What best defines the average price per kg that your family paid for tomatoes, onions, and potatoes this year? 27% of respondents said they paid ₹ 60 or more for tomatoes, ₹ 35 or more for onions, and ₹ 30 or more for potatoes. Another 23% said they paid between Rs 50 and ₹ 60 for tomatoes, ₹ 35 to ₹ 40 for onions, and ₹ 25 to ₹ 30 for potatoes. 7% of participants say that tomatoes cost between Rs 40 and ₹ 50, onions cost above ₹ 25 and ₹ 30, and between ₹20-25 for potatoes.
The survey’s findings suggest that the increase in vegetable prices at the consumer level may be more than the inflation numbers made public by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
NSO figures show that India’s retail inflation increased in September, reaching a five-month record of 7.41% year-over-year, primarily due to rising food costs. In the NSO’s monthly consumer price index, the price of food and beverages is weighted by more than 45%. Inflation in the price of food was 8.60 percent in September as opposed to 7.62% the month before. Of those who responded to the poll, 42% were from Tier 1 cities, 33% were from Tier 2, and 25% were from Tier 3, Tier 4, and Rural Districts.
