OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored advertising to the chatbot for the first time in one of its largest and fastest-growing markets. More than 50 brands are expected to go live during the initial rollout, while businesses will soon be able to access ChatGPT’s self-serve advertising platform.

The launch marks an important shift in the digital advertising landscape. ChatGPT is no longer only a destination for search, research and productivity. It is becoming a new environment where consumers can discover products, compare options and make purchase decisions through conversations.

For marketers, that could represent a fundamental change in how advertising works.

For users, it raises equally important questions about where ads will appear, who will see them, how they are targeted and whether conversations with ChatGPT are shared with advertisers.

Here is what you need to know about ChatGPT Ads in India.

    ChatGPT Ads launch in India

OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Ads in India on August 27, 2026.

The advertising programme will initially be available to logged-in adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans will not see ads.

The initial Indian rollout includes more than 50 brands, with OpenAI working with advertising groups WPP and Omnicom. The partnerships are non-exclusive, meaning OpenAI can work with additional agencies as the advertising programme expands.

The development is particularly significant for India because the country is among ChatGPT’s largest markets. According to recent reports, India has more than 100 million weekly active users, making it an important market for OpenAI’s consumer and monetisation strategy.

    Where will ChatGPT Ads appear?

ChatGPT Ads will appear below the end of a ChatGPT response and will be clearly labelled as sponsored content.

The advertisements are visually separated from the AI-generated answer, helping users distinguish between an organic ChatGPT response and a paid placement.

The basic idea is different from traditional search advertising.

Instead of a user typing a short keyword such as “best running shoes”, a person might have a longer conversation about their running habits, budget, preferences and requirements.

An advertiser could then appear at a relevant point in that decision-making journey.

OpenAI describes this as reaching people while they are exploring options, comparing choices and making decisions.

That makes conversational advertising potentially very different from conventional keyword-based advertising.

    How do ChatGPT Ads work?

According to OpenAI, ads operate separately from the ChatGPT response-generation system.

The company’s stated principle is that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Advertisers cannot pay to change, rank or alter an answer generated by ChatGPT.

For example, if a user asks ChatGPT to compare several products, the response should remain independent of whether one of those brands is running an advertisement.

The ad itself may appear separately below the response when there is a relevant sponsored product or service.

This distinction is important because AI assistants occupy a different position from conventional advertising platforms: users often perceive conversational answers as personalised recommendations rather than conventional search results.

Maintaining a separation between AI-generated answers and paid advertising will therefore be critical to preserving user trust.

Will ChatGPT use your conversations for advertising?

This is likely to be one of the biggest questions for Indian users.

OpenAI says that advertisers do not have access to users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details, and that it does not sell users’ data to advertisers. Advertisers receive aggregated campaign-performance information, such as overall views and clicks.

However, there is an important distinction between what advertisers receive and what information ChatGPT may use internally to determine which advertisement is relevant.

OpenAI’s advertising documentation says that ad selection can use information retained within ChatGPT. Depending on a user’s settings, this can include the current conversation and basic contextual information. With personalised ads enabled, certain signals from past chats, memories and interactions with advertisements can also be used.

That information is not passed on to the advertiser as identifiable user data.

Users can also turn off ad personalisation, dismiss advertisements, provide feedback, see why an advertisement was shown and clear data used for advertising through the available ad controls.

Who will see ChatGPT Ads in India?

The initial rollout is targeted at logged-in adults using the Free and Go tiers.

The Go subscription costs ₹399 per month in India.

Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans will remain ad-free. OpenAI also says advertisements are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18.

Ads are also restricted around sensitive or regulated subjects, including areas such as health, mental health and politics, according to OpenAI’s advertising principles and the current rollout information.

More than 50 brands are entering the first phase

The initial launch is notable for the level of advertiser interest.

OpenAI has partnered with WPP and Omnicom for the initial Indian rollout, with more than 50 brands expected to go live during the launch phase.

The agency partnerships also indicate that ChatGPT advertising is being positioned as more than another self-serve digital advertising channel.

For agencies, the opportunity could eventually involve helping brands understand how to build advertising for an environment where consumers ask questions in natural language rather than simply clicking through search results.

ChatGPT Ads Manager to open for businesses

OpenAI is also opening the platform to businesses beyond the initial agency-led rollout.

The company’s self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager is scheduled to become available in India on September 4, 2026.

Businesses of different sizes will be able to create campaigns themselves, with reported daily budgets starting at ₹725.

This could make ChatGPT advertising accessible to smaller businesses that may not work with large media agencies.

It also means marketers will have to learn a new advertising environment—one based less on traditional keyword intent and more on conversation, context and decision-making moments.

Why ChatGPT Ads could change digital marketing?

The biggest opportunity for brands is not simply access to another audience. It is access to consumers at a different point in the purchase journey. Traditional digital advertising often works around impressions, searches, clicks and retargeting.

ChatGPT introduces another layer: conversation-based intent.

Someone using ChatGPT may be actively researching a destination, comparing financial products, looking for a laptop, evaluating software or deciding which service provider to use.

That means brands could potentially reach consumers much closer to the moment when a decision is being formed.

OpenAI itself positions ChatGPT Ads around these “high-context” moments.

For marketers, this could eventually make AI visibility and conversational relevance as important as traditional search-engine visibility.

    The challenge: maintaining trust

The biggest challenge for OpenAI may not be advertiser demand. It could be user trust. ChatGPT is fundamentally different from a conventional advertising platform because users often turn to it for advice, analysis and personal decision-making.

If users begin to believe that commercial relationships influence answers, the value proposition of the platform could be weakened. OpenAI has therefore made three principles central to its advertising model:

Answer independence: Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.

Conversation privacy: Advertisers do not receive users’ conversations or personal information.

User control: Users can manage ad personalisation, dismiss ads and provide feedback.

How effectively these principles work at scale will be closely watched.

What ChatGPT Ads mean for Indian marketers

For Indian marketers, the launch could create a new category of advertising. The question may soon shift from:

“How do I rank on Google?”

    to:

“How does my brand become relevant when consumers ask AI?”

That could have major implications for SEO, content marketing, brand positioning, product feeds, reviews and digital PR.

Brands will increasingly need content and information that AI systems can understand, retrieve and contextualise.

In other words, AI discoverability could become the next layer of digital marketing.

ChatGPT Ads are only the beginning of that shift.

    What happens next?

The September 4 opening of ChatGPT Ads Manager will give Indian businesses a much broader opportunity to test the platform.

The next phase will likely reveal which advertising formats work, how users respond to sponsored recommendations and whether advertisers can generate meaningful business outcomes from conversational intent.

For OpenAI, India offers a particularly important test market because of its enormous ChatGPT user base and rapidly evolving digital advertising ecosystem.

For brands, it represents an opportunity to get in front of consumers in a completely new environment. And for users, it marks a significant change in how ChatGPT will work as a free and low-cost AI service.

The most important question is no longer whether AI will become an advertising platform.

It already has. The bigger question is whether AI advertising can become commercially valuable without compromising the trust that made conversational AI valuable in the first place.

Note: OpenAI’s advertising programme and availability may evolve as the rollout expands. Users and advertisers should refer to OpenAI’s latest product and advertising documentation for current eligibility, controls and terms.
