ideaForge Secures Government Funding for Heavy-Lift Drone Programme

ideaForge has secured a Letter of Intent for up to ₹151 crore in long-term debt financing. The Government of India is providing this funding under its ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme. ideaForge will use the funding to develop YETI, its heavy-lift autonomous drone platform.

The Letter of Intent marks a significant step for IdeaForge. The company is now moving forward with a fixed-wing VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) platform. It has designed the platform to operate in some of the most demanding terrains India’s defence and commercial sectors face.

What YETI Is Built to Do

YETI is a fixed-wing VTOL platform. This means it can take off and land vertically like a helicopter, while flying with the efficiency of a fixed-wing aircraft over longer distances. As a result, this combination suits regions where conventional runways remain unavailable or impractical.

ideaForge has designed the drone to carry payloads of up to 200 kg over a range of 200 km. That combination of lift capacity and range positions YETI for missions that smaller consumer or surveillance drones cannot handle, particularly in remote or high-altitude locations.

Where YETI Is Meant to Operate

ideaForge has designed YETI specifically for operations across the Himalayas, deserts and other challenging terrains. These environments present distinct engineering challenges. For instance, thin air at high altitudes, extreme temperature variation, and limited ground infrastructure all test a platform’s durability.

A heavy-lift autonomous platform that can navigate these conditions addresses a real logistics gap. This gap affects both military and civilian operations in remote parts of the country, where road access often stays limited or seasonal.

Dual Use Across Defence and Commercial Sectors

ideaForge expects YETI to serve two broad categories of use. On the defence side, the platform will support logistics, helping move supplies to forward or hard-to-reach locations. This removes the need for manned aircraft or ground convoys.

On the commercial side, ideaForge has outlined applications spanning infrastructure support, disaster response and cargo delivery. In disaster scenarios, for example, a drone that carries 200 kg over 200 km could deliver relief supplies to areas cut off by floods, landslides or earthquakes, where conventional transport breaks down.

The RDI Scheme’s Role in Backing Deep-Tech Development

The Government of India backs the Research, Development and Innovation scheme with a ₹1 lakh crore outlay. The scheme aims to support long-term, high-capital research and innovation projects. Long-term debt financing under such a scheme typically carries more favourable terms than conventional commercial lending. Therefore, it suits capital-intensive hardware development like autonomous aerial platforms well.

ideaForge’s Letter of Intent under this scheme signals government backing for indigenous drone technology. This backing extends to both strategic and civilian applications, at a time when India continues to push for greater domestic capability in defence-adjacent manufacturing.

    What Comes Next for ideaForge

The Letter of Intent represents an initial commitment rather than a finalised disbursement. As a result, the terms of the long-term debt financing will likely firm up as the YETI programme progresses. Going forward, investors and industry watchers will look for updates on development milestones, testing timelines, and any additional funding or partnerships as ideaForge advances the platform toward operational deployment.
