Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic partnership to jointly pursue the development and manufacture of an indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The proposed collaboration could mark a significant step in India’s ambition to build advanced fighter-engine capabilities within the country.
The partnership brings together Reliance Industries’ manufacturing and industrial capabilities with Rolls-Royce’s expertise in aerospace propulsion and combat-engine technology.
For India, however, the bigger significance lies beyond the two companies. A locally developed and manufactured fighter-jet engine is one of the most difficult pieces of the defence technology puzzle — and one that has remained a major challenge for the country’s indigenous aerospace ambitions.

Under the strategic intent announced on August 14, Reliance and Rolls-Royce plan to collaborate on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign combat engine for the AMCA programme.
The companies will also explore establishing a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. The proposed facility is expected to serve as a centre for advanced aerospace power and propulsion capabilities.
The idea is significant because fighter-engine technology involves much more than simply manufacturing an existing engine locally. It requires expertise across areas such as materials, thermal management, turbine technology, precision manufacturing, testing and systems integration.

What is India’s AMCA programme?
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s planned fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme.

Rolls-Royce had earlier proposed developing a new 120 kN-plus fighter engine for the AMCA programme, with a roadmap that envisaged an engine core test by 2030, first flight by 2034 and production by 2036 if a contract were signed by the end of 2026.
The final configuration and development timeline for the Reliance-Rolls-Royce proposal will depend on the programme’s contractual and government processes.
