Gautam Adani has announced a major healthcare and rural vision care initiative in Bihar with a combined long-term investment commitment exceeding ₹700 crore, aimed at strengthening affordable eye treatment and community healthcare access in underserved regions across India.

The announcement was made during the ground-breaking ceremony of a new rural eye care ecosystem in Mastichak, around 70 kilometres from Patna.

The initiative, backed by the Adani Foundation in partnership with Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, is expected to create one of the country’s largest rural vision care and ophthalmic training networks.

According to the group, the ecosystem will have the capacity to perform 3.3 lakh eye surgeries annually while also training nearly 1,000 eye healthcare professionals every year.

Adani Foundation to Develop ACE and ATOM in Bihar

As part of the ₹150 crore investment, the Adani Foundation will establish:

    • Adani Centre for Eye (ACE)
    • Adani Training in Ophthalmic Medicine (ATOM)

The facilities are designed to address both affordable treatment and rural healthcare workforce development.

ACE will function as an advanced eye treatment and surgical centre focused on:

    • affordable vision care
    • complex eye surgeries
    • large-scale rural outreach programmes

Meanwhile, ATOM will focus on training:

    • optometrists
    • ophthalmic assistants
    • community healthcare workers

The objective is to strengthen eye care delivery in rural and underserved areas where access to specialised treatment remains limited.

Gautam Adani Announces Additional ₹500 Crore Commitment

During the event, Gautam Adani also announced an additional ₹500 crore personal commitment to expand affordable vision care and community healthcare initiatives beyond Bihar.

A new trust named the Adani Akhand Jyoti Foundation will be created to scale the programme across underserved regions of India.

Speaking about the initiative, Gautam Adani described service as a central principle behind the project.

“Seva Hi Saadhna Hai is not merely a slogan, but a guiding philosophy that must translate compassion into lasting institutions for society.”

He further added that restoring eyesight goes beyond medical treatment.

“Restoring sight is not merely a medical intervention. It is about returning hope, confidence and dignity to a human life.”

Bihar Chosen as the Starting Point

The initiative places Bihar at the centre of one of India’s largest rural healthcare expansion programmes in the vision care sector.

According to Gautam Adani, Bihar holds deep social and historical importance.

    He described the state as:

“A land that has historically given new consciousness and direction to the nation.”

The initiative also aligns with the group’s broader investment strategy in Bihar, where the Adani Group has emerged as one of the state’s major private sector investors.

Current and planned investments in Bihar reportedly total nearly ₹40,000 crore across sectors including:

    • energy
    • infrastructure
    • gas distribution
    • smart metering
    • cement manufacturing

200-Bed Hospital Planned in Bhagalpur District

Apart from the eye care ecosystem in Mastichak, the Adani Foundation also announced plans to establish a 200-bed hospital in Pirpainti, located in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district.

The hospital will be developed near the Adani Group’s upcoming ultra-supercritical thermal power plant project.

The facility is expected to improve access to affordable healthcare services in eastern Bihar while expanding community outreach and treatment capabilities.

    Mobile Outreach to Remote Villages

As part of the initiative, a fleet of 10 patient transport buses under the ACE programme was also flagged off during the ceremony.

The transport network aims to improve last-mile access to vision care services across remote villages in Bihar and neighbouring regions.

Rural healthcare access remains one of the biggest challenges in India’s healthcare system, particularly for specialised services like ophthalmology.

By combining surgical infrastructure with mobile outreach, the initiative aims to reduce accessibility barriers for patients living in underserved communities.

Partnership with Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital

The project is being implemented in collaboration with Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, which has been working in rural eye care since 2005.

Originally established as a 30-bed facility in Bihar, the institution has reportedly conducted over 14 lakh sight-restoring surgeries along with millions of screenings and consultations.

Speaking about the partnership, Mritunjay Tiwary, Co-Founder and CEO of Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, described the collaboration as a long-term humanitarian initiative.

“This partnership is far beyond the creation of infrastructure. It is a shared commitment towards restoring sight, dignity, opportunity and hope for countless people living in underserved regions of India.”

Aligning with India’s Blindness Control Goals

The initiative also supports the broader goals of the Government of India’s National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI).

The programme aims to improve affordable and community-driven eye care delivery systems across the country.

The Adani Foundation stated that its own Vision Care Programme has already:

    • conducted 1.93 lakh eye screenings
    • supported 59,000 beneficiaries with prescription eyeglasses
    • expanded outreach across 11 Indian states

The foundation completes 30 years of community service this year.

Healthcare, Skill Development and Social Investment

The Bihar healthcare initiative reflects the Adani Group’s larger focus on healthcare, education, and skill development as part of its social investment strategy.

In 2022, the Adani family announced a ₹60,000 crore commitment toward healthcare, education, and skilling initiatives.

This was followed by another ₹10,000 crore social commitment announced last year.

Over the past few years, the group has also expanded community outreach through large-scale public service initiatives during major religious and cultural gatherings.

    Final Thoughts

The new rural eye care ecosystem in Bihar could emerge as one of the largest community-led vision care initiatives in India.

By combining affordable treatment, ophthalmic training, rural outreach, and healthcare infrastructure, the project attempts to address both medical access and healthcare workforce gaps simultaneously.

For Bihar, the initiative also reinforces the state’s growing importance in large-scale healthcare and infrastructure investments.

And for millions living in underserved regions, access to vision care could potentially become more affordable and accessible in the years ahead.
