India has surpassed the 700,000-startup mark, according to data from the market intelligence platform Tracxn, reaffirming the country’s position as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem after the United States and China. As of July 2026, the platform counts 701,011 startups operating across the country.

    Funding, Unicorns, and Top Cities

Of these, 34,527 startups have raised external funding, collectively pulling in $626 billion in venture capital and private equity since inception. The ecosystem has also produced 132 unicorns, companies valued at $1 billion or more, with real estate technology firm Square Yards becoming the latest entrant on June 23 after closing a $95.1 million Series C round. Bengaluru continues to lead the domestic startup map, hosting 5,286 startups and accounting for 56 of India’s 132 unicorns, followed by Mumbai with 3,746 startups and Delhi with 2,496.

Sectors, Investors, and a Slowdown in New Startups

Consumer and SME loans, along with banking, emerge as the most heavily funded sectors, drawing $46.1 billion and $39 billion respectively across more than 3,641 companies. Investors have taken part in 51,523 funding rounds to date, with 121,569 individual investors participating in the ecosystem. The pace of new company formation, however, has slowed sharply: startup founding numbers fell 59.4 percent in 2025, dropping to 6,943 new companies from 17,109 in 2024, as investors tighten scrutiny on unit economics and profitability following years of aggressive, growth-first funding. Tracxn data also shows that 108,784 startups have shut down operations since the ecosystem began scaling.

Global Standing and the Government’s Official Count

Globally, India trails only the United States, which has produced 1,221 unicorns, and China, with 248. India has added six new unicorns so far in 2026, one more than during the same period last year. Government figures paint a related but distinct picture: the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has formally recognised over 1.6 lakh startups under the Startup India initiative as of early 2026, a narrower official count that excludes many companies tracked by private databases like Tracxn. DPIIT-recognised startups have created more than 16.6 lakh direct jobs, with IT services, healthcare, and professional services emerging as the largest employers.

    Growth Beyond the Metros

Startup growth is also spreading beyond India’s traditional hubs. A separate Tracxn report published in March found that more than 68,000 startups now operate outside major clusters such as Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai, with cities including Jaipur, Surat, Indore, and Coimbatore driving a growing share of new ventures. Women-led enterprises have also expanded their footprint, with 23,461 companies founded by women now counted within India’s startup base, according to Tracxn.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly cited the scale of India’s startup ecosystem as evidence of a broader economic shift, telling a Rozgar Mela gathering in May that young Indians are increasingly choosing entrepreneurship over traditional employment, with participation growing fastest in tier-2 and smaller cities.
