Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra chaired a half-yearly meeting with top bank executives in Mumbai, covering technology adoption, external risks, and credit provisioning reforms.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra met with the CEOs and Managing Directors of major public- and private-sector banks in Mumbai on July 14, 2026. The RBI Bank CEOs Meeting covered four major themes: artificial intelligence adoption, geopolitical risks, Expected Credit Loss norms, and FCNR deposit inflows. Deputy Governors Swaminathan J., Poonam Gupta, S. C. Murmu, and Rohit Jain also attended the discussions.

Technology and Risk Take Center Stage

Malhotra urged banks to expand their use of Artificial Intelligence in Banking to improve operational efficiency and strengthen customer service. He asked lenders to deploy AI tools while simultaneously building robust cybersecurity systems and internal controls. The Governor tied technology adoption directly to fraud prevention, noting that stronger safeguards must accompany any new digital capability.

AI adoption matters for the Indian Banking Sector because it directly affects how quickly banks can process transactions, detect fraud, and serve customers across urban and rural markets. As banks scale their AI systems, the RBI wants assurance that data protection and customer trust remain intact throughout that expansion.

The meeting also addressed how global geopolitical developments could affect India’s banking sector and broader financial stability. Ongoing tensions in West Asia have already influenced crude oil prices, currency movements, and global trade flows this year. Bank leaders and RBI officials discussed how these external pressures could filter through to domestic lending, liquidity, and interest rate conditions.

Geopolitical risk has become a recurring theme in RBI communications, since external shocks can quickly translate into currency volatility or funding pressures for Indian banks. Reviewing preparedness for these scenarios allows lenders to adjust their risk models before disruptions materialize.

Provisioning Reform and Foreign Capital Inflows

Malhotra reviewed bank preparedness for implementing Expected Credit Loss norms, a provisioning framework that requires banks to set aside funds based on anticipated future loan losses rather than losses that have already occurred. This forward-looking model differs from India’s current incurred-loss approach, under which banks provision only after a loan shows signs of default. The shift to the ECL Framework represents one of the more significant regulatory changes facing Indian lenders in recent years. Banks will need updated risk models, more granular data, and revised capital planning to comply once the RBI finalizes implementation timelines.

Bank leaders also discussed Foreign Currency Non-Resident deposits, commonly known as FCNR deposits, which allow non-resident Indians to hold fixed deposits in foreign currency with Indian banks. The RBI introduced a concessional scheme for FCNR deposit mobilization last month, aimed at attracting greater foreign capital into the country. These deposits play a direct role in strengthening India’s foreign exchange liquidity and supporting the rupee’s stability against global currency fluctuations. Malhotra’s team sought feedback from bank CEOs on how the new scheme is performing since its introduction.

    A Unified Push for Resilience

Throughout the meeting, Malhotra emphasized that the Reserve Bank of India expects banks to build resilience across every function, not just in isolated areas. He linked technology adoption, geopolitical preparedness, and credit-provisioning reforms to a single goal: a banking system capable of absorbing shocks while continuing to serve customers reliably.

The Governor also reiterated that risk management and governance standards must keep pace with innovation, rather than trail behind it. This framing positioned AI adoption and regulatory reform as complementary priorities rather than competing demands on bank resources.

The half-yearly meeting between RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and India’s bank CEOs addressed four interconnected priorities: AI adoption, geopolitical risk preparedness, ECL implementation, and FCNR deposit mobilization. Together, these discussions reflect the central bank’s continued focus on building a more resilient and future-ready Indian banking sector.
