Noida International Airport (NIA) officially commenced commercial operations on June 15, 2026, marking a major milestone for India’s aviation sector and regional connectivity. The airport welcomed its first passengers with an inaugural IndiGo flight arriving from Lucknow, while a special outbound flight carried 170 farmers from Jewar to the Uttar Pradesh capital to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The airport, located in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar, is set to become one of India’s largest aviation hubs and the second airport serving the National Capital Region (NCR), alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
First Flights Signal New Era for NCR Connectivity
Commercial operations at Noida International Airport begin with 12 daily domestic flights, a number expected to rise to 42 daily flights from July 2026. Airlines, including IndiGo and Akasa Air, have announced services connecting major destinations such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Jammu, Amritsar, Dehradun, Dharamshala, Lucknow, Bareilly, Pantnagar, and Kishangarh.
A symbolic moment during the launch saw villagers whose ancestral land was acquired for the Jewar airport project board the first passenger flight to Lucknow. Many of these residents played a direct role in making the ambitious infrastructure project a reality.
Enhanced Transport Network to Boost Passenger Access
To ensure seamless travel, authorities have introduced extensive road transport links to the Jewar airport. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has launched bus services connecting the airport with Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Lucknow, Faridabad, Palwal, and several other cities.
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has also started services from Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar ISBT. Private operators such as RedBus and Zingbus will further strengthen connectivity with destinations including Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Dehradun.
A proposed rapid rail-cum-metro corridor connecting Noida International Airport with Delhi’s IGI Airport is expected to significantly improve inter-airport connectivity in the coming years.
India’s Next Mega Aviation Hub
The Jewar airport was conceived after the Union Cabinet approved a second NCR airport in 2017. Developed by Zurich Airport International AG, the project broke ground in November 2021.
In its first phase, the airport features one runway and the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. Upon completion, it will operate four runways and accommodate up to 70 million passengers per year, positioning it among India’s largest airports.
As international flight operations are expected to begin in the coming months, Noida International Airport is poised to transform travel, tourism, logistics, and economic development across Uttar Pradesh and northern India.
